What it was like in the Mission, at Chase as Warriors clinched

Crazed and ecstatic Warriors fans poured into the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District on Thursday night, blocking traffic and dancing on the roofs of cars, after the Dubs scored their fourth NBA title of the Steph Curry era. An unofficial victory party quickly took over the neighborhood, as locals shot off fireworks, filling the sky overhead with bursts of color. While the vibe was intense, everything remained peaceful. Police were dispersed throughout the neighborhood to provide security, but they stood back from the crowds. As of 10 p.m. there were no reports of major problems, but the party promised to roll deep into the night.

A parade of honking cars — many with passengers hanging out of sunroofs and waving blue-and-gold flags — passed down Mission. Those on the sidelines charged after the cars shouting “Warriors,” banging on windows and giving drivers high-fives.

A huge group took over a portion of Mission Street between 19th and 20th streets, and police blocked the area off to traffic. Dance parties formed in the beds of trucks, and drinks were passed around.

At Laszlo bar, a massive screen covering an entire wall displayed the post-game coverage and DJs were spinning records. Next door, a live band played at Arcana, the plant store that turns into a wine bar at night.

Two miles away, outside the Chase Center, the first song to play through the speakers after the final buzzer sounded was, “Where the Party At.” As for the answer to the title of Jagged Edge’s 2001 hit? The party was everywhere outside the arena where the Dubs went an impressive 11-1 this postseason. Immediately, an air horn sprung forth. So did bottles of champagne and plenty of television cameras.

A large portion of the jubilant crowd rushed to the front of the arena to watch their golden boy, Curry, receive his first Finals MVP. Others raced toward the team store to grab championship gear (the team store employees were ready for the chaos that ensued and handled it like pros). Fireworks shot off from the top of the Chase Center, but that didn’t go quite as well – you couldn’t see much unless you were far from the arena.

The party area, which the Warriors call Thrive City, operated by two rules: If there was music, people needed to dance, and whenever one fan blew his air horn, the intoxicating (and intoxicated) audience needed to jump up and down as a mob. Another fan passed through the crowd while carrying an umbrella with a photo of every Warriors player attached to it. He, too, started a dance line. As the crowd thinned out, the few who hadn’t made their way home or toward the Mission remained dancing, while NBC Sports Bay Area held its postgame show nearby.
