BWF World Tour Finals moved from Guangzhou to Bangkok due to COVID-19

The upcoming BWF World Tour finals have been moved from Guangzhou to Bangkok due to COVID-19 and will start on December 7, a week earlier than scheduled, the world badminton body announced on Tuesday.

The tournament, which was due to start on December 14, has been pushed back due to stadium availability issues.

The season-ending event will now be held at Bangkok’s Nimibutr Arena from December 7-11.

“The BWF, in consultation with the China Badminton Association (CBA), has agreed to move the 2022 HSBC BWF World Tour Finals due to various challenges posed by the current pandemic situation,” the BWF said in a statement.

“The BWF would also like to thank the Badminton Association of Thailand for providing an alternate venue for the 2022 HSBC BWF World Tour Finals at such late notice.”

The BWF added that it will confirm the list of qualified athletes for the tournament on November 22 after the conclusion of the ongoing Australian Open.

HS Prannoy will likely be India’s only singles representative at the World Tour Finals. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, the only other Indian to qualify for the season-ending event, had withdrawn from the tournament on Sunday as she is still not fully recovered from a stress fracture in her left ankle.

Sindhu, who won the season-ending competition in 2018, has not competed since winning CWG gold. She had recently returned to training but decided to take more time to heal ahead of the 2023 season, which begins the Olympic qualifying cycle and also has the Asian Games. This year, Sindhu has three titles to his credit: the Syed Modi International, the Swiss Open and the Singapore Open.
